Embyr tends her tavern while keeping her dangerous parentage a secret, until she’s attacked by a hellhound and saved by one of the most feared men in history.

For the last eight hundred years, Ryder McLennon, the infamous leader of Death’s Horsemen, has used his army to hunt the vampire who killed his wife. He’s earned a reputation as a murderous madman. But in Embyr, he discovers something that could turn the tide of battle in his favor. Her control over fire can reduce an enemy to ash and her flippant disregard of him heats his blood in ways no one else ever has. She’s beautiful, powerful and completely different from her violence-loving brethren.

Embyr finds herself thrust into a war she wants no part of, targeted by a vicious vampire because of her cooperation with Ryder. As she learns to wield her demonic powers without letting the madness of her race overcome her, she also has to fight her attraction to a killer bent on her seduction.

EXCERPT 11 – Consequences

He had a nice laugh when he wasn’t trying to be cruel or intimidating. Embyr crossed to the window in an attempt to put a little distance between them and threw open the shutters. Cool night air swept over her skin, easing whatever it was he’d stirred inside her.

She arched a brow and leaned a little further out of the window, surprised to find herself in a tower. A large, wide courtyard stretched out before her, lit with torches. Beyond that, she could make out homes and buildings nestled within tall stone walls.

“Where are we?” She turned to face Ryder.

“Deep in the forest to the west of Al’Din.”

Her lips thinned. “You don’t have to lie if you don’t want me to know. No one lives in that forest. It’s dead and full of wolves and…” she trailed off. “Oh. You’re the reason no one goes into the forest.”

He nodded. “Those rumors were intentionally spread to keep people away when Al’Din was little more than a fishing village. I have patrols to stop the people who do not listen.”

Well, that made sense. Death had to keep his army somewhere, though she had no idea it was so close to her city. The fact that he’d kept it hidden so long was impressive, especially since it looked like he commanded a small city instead of an army.

“Thank you for bringing me here. For saving me.”

“I told you I would protect you. Did you believe I would not come for you?”

Her eyes dropped to an imaginary spot on the floor. “Yes.”

Large boots filled her vision. A finger curled under her chin and lifted her head until she looked at him. “Yet you let him take you. Why?”

“Katrina told me of the vampire attacks in the city. And Lorin spoke of Atrarius, as well. What you are trying to do is more important than my safety. If Michael killed you because I was too selfish to intervene, it would cost a great many people their lives.”

“Anyone who thinks you are evil is a fool.”

Embyr shifted from foot to foot, unsure how she should take that. “While I appreciate all you’ve done for me, I really should return home. The tavern doesn’t run itself.”

He walked over to the table and pulled out the chair, settling into it. He had that look about him, the one that suggested he was about to say something she wouldn’t like.

“That is not the best course of action. Last night proved you are no longer safe in your tavern.”

“But Michael is dead,” she said. “He can’t harm me now.”

Ryder sat forward in the chair, pinning her with a hard gaze. “I do not think you realize what you have done, Embyr. Eight hundred years is a long time for a vampire to grow more powerful and advance through the ranks of his coven.”

Cold dread settled over her.

“How far did he get?” she asked, biting down hard on her lower lip.

“By pure chance, you managed to kill the second-in-command to the world’s strongest vampire.”
