REVIEW

Disclaimer: I partnered with Usborne Publishing in organizing a PH-based blog tour for It Only Happens In The Movies by Holly Bourne. Huge thanks to Usborne Publishing for providing a copy for review. This didn’t affect my opinion of the book in any way.

It Only Happens In The Movies is one of those books that you just can’t simply put down as soon as you start reading it. You can’t help but wonder what happens next, so you just continue reading until you’re done. But what can I say? It’s Holly Bourne!

This is the fourth book by Holly Bourne that I’ve read. And there is absolutely no doubt when it comes to Holly Bourne’s writing. I loved her Spinster Club series, and with It Only Happens In The Movies, she proved her craft even more.

The story picks up when Audrey has to do a paper about romantic films for her Media Studies. During this time, Audrey was just recovering from her previous relationship and at the same time she’s still dealing with her mother who has been in an unresponsive stupor due to her parents’ broken relationship.

Desperate for an escape, she started working on a cinema where she met the wanna-be filmmaker Harry. Harry is described as your typical womanizer in every rom-com movies or novels. Audrey even called him what is commonly known today as fuccboi”.

I have so many feels about this book! When I finished it, the only thing that I was able to write on Goodreads was this… “AAAAAAHHHKHKFJGJAJAGAG@&$&$%@AGDH!!!!” with five-glowing stars. Lol

Romance in real life vs. Romance in fiction

It Only Happens In The Movies is every bit of “realistic”. In Audrey’s studies about romance films, she weighed every clichés in romantic films compared to what we really experience in real life romances. She pointed out how every romantic film only shows the good parts, but never the ugliest parts of a relationship. Well, there are conflicts in romantic films, but if you do a reality check, these conflicts are quite far from what we actually experience in reality.

Most of the times, romantic films are limited and done accordingly to stereotypes. And when it comes to endings, they mostly just end at the best part of the couple’s romantic life. I know, except Nicholas Sparks. But the real question is, what happened next after the movie ended at that good part? Who knows.

This notion always gives us what we view as “perfection”, or what we call today as #relationshipgoals. We are so blinded by what the society wants us to believe that we fail to see what is really upon us in reality. Not only in romances or relationships in general, but also in so many things in life.

Okay, I still like romance movies and novels and all those cheesy and mushy stuff. But there are just so many things that Audrey – or Holly Bourne rather – pointed out in this book which gave me that realization moment. I mean, THIS WOMAN IS JUST SO FREAKING BRILLIANT AND ON POINT!

Audrey, her family and her friends

Holly Bourne explored so many timely topics and issues in just 410 pages. Friendship, family conflicts, relationship, dealing with self and anxiety, and breaking stereotypes. One book seems not enough, but Holly Bourne managed to fit all the pieces in this book, so neatly.

There was a moment when Audrey became so distant from her friends because she was too focused  on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend. After her break-up, her friends comforted her and they welcomed her back to the group. But she was having doubts if what they’re showing is genuine because she’s aware that she’s the one who built a wall between their friendships.

This is really on point, because one of my friends had a very similar case with her girlfriends when she got into a relationship. Reading this from Holly Bourne’s book is like having a deja vu.

What I like about Audrey’s character is how aware she was of herself. That she’s not perfect and she has done things that affected her surroundings resulting to her anxieties. Her character is not convincing the readers to like her, but to understand her. It seems like Holly Bourne wants to give us that person she knows we can all relate to, somehow at some point. And Audrey is that person – a very realistic, normal, and relatable character.

Cliché in a good kind of way

It Only Happens In The Movies is both light and heavy. I know it might sound confusing, but those conflicting feelings are what I really felt while reading the book. The way Holly delivered everything was light, fun, and  fast read – just like your typical rom-com novels. But at the same time, it tackles a lot of heavy issues that are commonly experienced by most teenagers.

It is also very cliché, but everything was told in a CLEVER and UNCONVENTIONAL way. Audrey was criticizing every cliché thing in films on her Media Studies project, only to realize that her life, and what she’s about to do are all very cliché themselves. So, it’s like she’s mocking herself when she’s about to do cliché things. Well, I don’t really have problems with clichés myself. I actually like clichés.

Final verdict

I think this is by far my most favorite Holly Bourne book. I want to say more things but I don’t want to give away too much about the book. But as what my friend Mommy Sol from Queen Soleil told me – this is the book that she should have read when she was still younger. It contains parts that may trigger anxiety, but I think this is a perfect book for older teenagers.

Oh, and if you like zombies, you’ll get some of it.

Lastly, I loved the ending so freaking much! It had left me in a emotional roller coaster because I didn’t know what to feel after that ending. But after few minutes, it dawned on me that THIS IS THE PERFECT ENDING FOR THIS BOOK.

PS, to my fellow Filipino readers, National Bookstore‘s version of It Only Happens In The Movies comes with an exclusive letter from Holly Bourne for her Filipino readers.

* About The Author *

Holly Bourne writes YA novels and blogs about feminist issues. Her favourite things to complain loudly about are: the stigma of mental health, women’s rights, and the under-appreciation of Keanu Reeves’ acting ability.

Holly’s first two books, Soulmates and The Manifesto on How to be Interesting, have been critically acclaimed and translated into six languages. The first book in the ‘Normal’ series, Am I Normal Yet?, has been chosen as a World Book Night book for 2016 and has inspired the formation of Spinster Clubs around the country.

Before becoming a full-time author, Holly was editor and relationship advisor for a charity website.

* Excerpt *

“Watching after Masie can’t possibly be that bad,” I say, earning me a sympathetic grin.

“Never underestimate the fairer sex’s ability to cause a ruckus, Benny.”

His own car rolls up to the curb, and he helps June into it before sliding in himself. “You need a ride?” he asks out the window.

I’m about to say yes when I see Dickey sitting on the curb across the street, sucking on a Lucky. “Nah, I’m jake. Thanks anyway. See you tomorrow.”

I cross the road to my friend who, despite the pained grin on his face, turns his chin toward the sun. “If I didn’t know better, I’d call you the luckiest bastard on the planet, Benny.”

I offer him a hand up, which he accepts. “Yeah, all I had to do was get shot and almost die.”

He shrugs, tossing the butt on the ground and stomping it with the toe of his shoe. “You just remember who made the introductions there, Mr. Big Shot.”

“I doubt you’ll let me forget,” I joke, slapping him on the back. “What happened to the dames you were with earlier? I expected to find you necking in a back booth.”

Now he grins. “What, those baby vamps? Nah, chunks of lead compared to that canary I saw you beating your gums at.”

“She’s Dutch’s daughter,” I say, shaking my head as we walk toward the trolley stop. “Might as well have hands off tattooed across her forehead.”

“Man might risk it for a dame like that,” Dickey says, shooting me a warning scowl. “Don’t go getting crushed now. Them fellas, they may walk like us and talk like us, but make no mistake, Benny, we ain’t nothin’ like them.”

* Review *

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review. This doesn’t affect my opinion of the book in this review in any way. This is also in participation for The Royal Polar Bear Reads‘ blog tour.

The moment I stepped into the world of Warcross, I knew I was already part of the game… And that it’s already impossible to logout. In the end, I finished the game regretting nothing.

Boy, that was hell of a ride! Warcross is my very first Marie Lu book. Yes, yes, I know! I know I’ve missed out a lot on her previous books, and I promise I’ll go down those rides soon! Okay, truth be told, I’ve always wanted to read Legend, but there are those times when I’m just not up for mainstream books. But you know what? I now regret not getting into the Marie Lu fandom so soon!

Get into Warcross world

Warcross first introduced the life of Emika Chen, the main protagonist of the story. Emika is a skilled hacker and bounty hunter – a skill she uses for a living. She tracks down people involved in illegal activities that police authority doesn’t have the time to track down. Most of these illegal activities are Warcross related such as illegal gambling and illegal trades done in the Warcross black market known as Dark World.

Warcross is a game, but not your ordinary game. It is already considered as a way of life for most people who play Warcross, including Emika. One day, due to her desperation to earn a sum amount of money to pay her 3-month due rent, she decided to hack into the opening ceremony of Warcross championship, but accidentally glitched herself into the game.

The next morning, believing that she’ll get arrested for interrupting the championship game, instead she was shocked to get an invitation to the Henka Games headquarters in Tokyo. The invitation was directly from the creator of Warcross, the genius Hideo Tanaka.

Well, what more to say? That short introduction alone is already engaging, if you ask me. To be honest, I didn’t set my expectation too high to avoid disappointments later. But as someone who played online games a lot back in the days, watched Sword Art Online and almost worshiped sci-fi anime Gundam Seed Destiny? Who am I kidding?! Okay, I was extremely excited to read this one.

But as much as I’m excited for Warcross, I didn’t immediately got immersed in the story. Maybe also because I had other business in my sleeve when I started the book. But even so, I loved how Marie Lu’s writing style and overall storytelling kept me going, and later got me involved.

The world

You have no idea how mesmerized I was with the Warcross world.

This is the part that I’m most excited to talk about. Marie Lu was very detailed in building her Warcross world (both inside and outside the game). It was futuristic, colorful, and something that any gamer would want to experience.

I think the best visual representation I can picture from my imaginary NeuroLink while reading Wacross is the Neo-Seoul from Cloud Atlas, and the Neo-Niihama Japan from Ghost in The Shell. Warcross world (specifically Tokyo Japan) may be a little more or less futuristic and advanced than those two mentioned in one way or another.

image from Cloud Atlas movie
image from Ghost in The Shell movie
The characters

I already mentioned my girl, Emika Chen. Emika already started as a feisty one. Mostly due to her status of life. One thing is for sure though, Emika is immediately one of my favorite YA heroines. A kickass, smart, and someone who always thinks before she acts? Why, yes!

Emika is the definition of colors in the Warcross world.  Well, not because she’s a ball of sunshine or a bubbly person. It’s mainly because of her rainbow hair and tattoos. I actually think that her colorful appearance is very contrasting with her personality, and job as a bounty hunter and hacker.

Then there’s Hideo, the creator of Warcross. I like this guy, but not as much as I like Emika. Maybe because I think I need to know more about him. He was only able to let us all in with his life at the near end, and I know that there’s more.

Supporting character wise, I was satisfied by the way Marie Lu got the other Warcross championship players (specifically Emika’s teammates) more involved in the story at the end. I liked Emika’s teammates, especially Roshan and HammieI’m hoping that they’ll take more appearances and roles in the next book. That means more games; more games means more actions.

And lastly, Zero – the guy who’s supposed to be the villain of the game. This is one of those rare times where I can’t seem to hate the villain. Well, there’s a reason for it, and you should read the book and see if you’ll feel the same way. Haha

There’s also a romance between Emika and Hideo, not surprising, really. It’s not over-the-top romance, which I personally really like. And I like how it sends butterflies even with just the faintest romantic gesture.

The games

In addition to the amazing world-building, there are these action-packed games. You probably get all so pumped up whenever you play your online games on your phone or computer, and now with what we call virtual reality (VR) box.

Imagine a VR box on a whole new and advanced level. You, inside (well not really, but almost) the game you’re playing? SICK! The games played a huge part in making me so engaged with Warcross.

Final verdict

I’m not gonna lie. It’s pretty predictable at some points. Or maybe I was only able to predict things here, and all that will change and Marie Lu will give me a big shock in the next book.

To be honest, I can feel that there are bigger things ahead, and I could be wrong with all of my predictions after all. So, I’m just going to wait for Marie Lu to burst my bubbles. But sad news. We’re going to have to wait ’til next year.

One last thing. Again, Warcross is not just a game. There are messages in the book that I believe Marie Lu wanted for us, the world, to read. And it makes sense.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Warcross empire. So, if you’re up for a little game, and a little ride, come play Warcross!

Hey guys! It’s time for another book subscription box unboxing, and this time, it’s from Once Upon A Book Club Box!

Once Upon A Book Club box is one of my ultimate book subscription box goals to have, and I was extremely happy when I got chosen as one of their May-July 2017 reps! So, before we dive onto the unboxing, let me first give you a brief information about this book subscription box.

* About Once Upon A Book Club*

Once Upon A Book Club was formed by the owner/designer Michelle Wolett of Chick Lit Designs and Once Upon a BookCase. It all started after Michelle read “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah. She wanted to create a reading experience where readers will feel that they are physically part of the world they’re reading.

They have two types of boxes: Adult box and Young Adult box.

*What to Expect Inside The Box *

Once Upon A Book Club box has a very cool concept. This book subscription box aims to provide a different reading experience to their subscribers. Each box includes a book, a quote print and 3-5 gifts that match a quote/line from the book on their corresponding page numbers.

* May 2017 – Time Travel Romance Once Upon A Book Club Box *

Disclaimer: I was chosen as one of the May – July 2017 reps of the Adult Once Upon A Book Club Box to help unbox, and promote throughout social media platforms. I received the Time Travel Romance Once Upon A Book Club box directly from the the team.

Other than OwlCrate, and FairyLoot, Once Upon A Book Club box has always been on my radar. Why? Because I keep seeing YA book subscription boxes, but no adult ones. And as a reader who’s so much into historical fiction, this is the perfect book subscription box to opt for.

They include variety of adult fictions in their monthly boxes such as historical fiction, women’s fiction, and contemporary fiction. They used to only have an adult box, but they have recently opened the YA box subscription.

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen my unboxing already. I’m also currently reading the featured book, so, I also unwrap gifts whenever I reach a certain page.

This unboxing will contain full details of the May 2017 Once Upon A Book Club box, and potential spoilers.

* May 2017 Hint *

Once Upon A Book Club revealed the hint for May 2017 box as Time Travel Romance. The book featured for this month is only released on eBooks, but got exclusively printed for Once Upon A Book Club. It means you won’t see this book in physical form anywhere else except Once Upon A Book Club May box (and in the Philippines, explained later on this post).

Hey guys! I haven’t done Stacking The Shelves since December of last year. And I know, I know! I’m so sorry for the lack of posts since the last quarter of 2016, and for being missing-in -action a lot. It’s been tough for me. I’ve been trying really hard, but it just won’t happen. But hey! Now, the blogging gods are finally blessing me with motivations, so yay! I really hope that I can stay active for long this time!

Today, I’m going to share my first quarter of 2017 book haul. And yes, I’m going to ditch the Stacking The Shelves weekly feature by Tynga’s Reviews from here on, and just stick with “Book Haul” feature, so that I can freely post in any day of the week.

Also, I don’t want this to look like, in any way, a form of bragging of what I’m getting. This is just a way of me sharing “new” titles that can be a way for readers to discover from my stack and add them on their own TBR pile. And also, as a form of thanking people, who are extremely generous to send me copies. I, myself, love seeing book hauls and unboxing photos, and see what other bloggers/bookstagrammers/readers get, so I hope that you discover new titles from my new stack as well!

Hey guys! It feels like it’s been ages since the last time I posted something here in my blog. I changed job last July and I’ve been settling to the new environment in the past few months, then piles of work happened. So, yeah… I was buried alive. Anyway, I’m really glad that things are working smoothly recently, so, I can now catch up with my long overdue book reviews and posts. There are so many!!! That being said, I’d like to extend my apologies to the publishers and authors whom I owe book reviews. I promise to catch up. Really.

For now, let me share with you what I’ve hauled this last August and September. Most are from authors and publishers, so thank you so so much! Cheers! <3

  • His Fair Assassin (3 books) by Robin LaFevers

I haven’t done “Stacking The Shelves” in a while (mainly because I didn’t have hauls this past months. lol). Last time I did this was in February… Yeah, March and April were quite sad and empty. lol

Anyway, I’m back! And I’m featuring my May and June hauls. I missed STS last May, sooo combining it with this month end. How fast time can fly, imagine it? It’s already July folks!!!

* MAY BOOK HAUL *

dsc_6135

I decided to go on a book ban from May (or at least limit myself to maximum of 2 books per month) because I’d like to treat myself on my birthday which is in August. It’s surprisingly not that hard compared to when I was still in college. Maybe because I’m broke af right now. lol

Anyway, from this pile, I only bought two (2) books, and the rest are gifts. I have an amazing friend who always take pity on me, so he gives me books when I’m too hopeless. Lol. But seriously, I’m grateful to him. Thank you!

– Bought –

  • Starflight by Melissa Landers – I bought this one because it was a late reservation. It was supposed to have arrive in March, but I was only informed that there’s finally an available copy in May. So I was quite ready for this. I was quite excited for this one, but I got it late. Bummer!
  • The Crown by Kiera Cass – bought this because, well, I want to read the ending of Selection and also, I eventually put it for giveaway. 🙂

– Received –

  • The Selection, Elite, One, Heir by Kiera Cass
  • Air Awakens, Fire Falling, Earth’s End by Elise Kova

I got all these from the friend I mentioned above. I, myself, is still quite stupefied by the fact that he gave me 7 hardcovers. I mean, I have never received something this big from one person before… so, what have I ever done to deserve these? lol. Quite serious though, I’m just thankful. Really. Thanks, Raf! I’ll be a really good buddy, I promise. lol

  • What I Couldn’t Tell You by Faye Bird – Thanks Usborne UK for sending me this review copy!

** I wasn’t able to list down my May eBooks… so I’ll pass on that. Can’t remember anymore.
